Join Karin Hellaby for a crafting and stitching adventure in India and experience the rich textiles, vibrant colours and cultural wonders of this quite extraordinary country. This magnificent holiday will take us to iconic locations in Delhi, Varanasi, Jodhpur and Udaipur where we will discover exquisite local crafts and meet with the skilled artisans who create these masterpieces. Our unique itinerary also includes a two night stay in historic Lucknow, renowned for its beautiful embroidery.

Also included is a workshop led by Karin, giving you the opportunity to get creative too.

CRAFTS

We’ll visit The Crafts Museum in Delhi and join weavers for a workshop in Varanasi. In Lucknow we will learn about the embroidery styles of Chikan, Zari and Aari and join an interactive workshop with a local designer. In Jodphur we will visit the workshops of Dhurrie rug makers and discover more typical Rajasthani handicrafts during a visit to an NGO organisation in a village nearby. We will also visit a Rajasthani village to see local women embroidering sarees and see craftsmen creating colourful threads for typical Rajasthani shoes. Our visit to Udaipur will include visits to the workshops of gold block printers, miniature painters and puppet makers and a crafts centre which is dedicated to keeping rural and traditional folk art alive.

DELHI

Our Indian adventure begins in the capital with visits to the contrasting surroundings of Old and New Delhi. We’ll experience the elegant, colonial architecture of times gone by and the atmospheric, bustling streets and markets of the old city.

VARANASI

Varanasi, “City of Light” is the holiest city in India and one of the most colourful and fascinating places in India. We will experience the spirit of the sacred River Ganges and discover life at dusk and dawn along its bustling banks. A tour of the old city and temples is also included during our stay.

LUCKNOW

Boasting splendid British Raj buildings and famed throughout India for its cuisine the city of Lucknow remains relatively undiscovered by visitors. Lucknow prospered under the rule of the Nawabs during the 18th and 19th century, they left a rich heritage of art and culture and we will discover this legacy during our stay.

JODPHUR

The mighty Mehrangarh Fortress dominates the “Blue City” of Jodphur. We will discover this architectural masterpiece and the tangle of winding streets which stretch out below. There will be time to browse in the markets and bazaars where you can seek out treasures to take back home.

JOJAWAR

As well as two nights at a historic hotel we’ll also enjoy a ride aboard a heritage train, travelling into the surrounding countryside of Rajasthan. Jojawar will also be the ideal spot to relax, perhaps take a dip in the hotel pool and contemplate all the wonderful sights that we have seen so far on our magical journey.
