The Island of Madeira has for many years been a firm favourite with First for Bridge guests, particularly in November when we have usually been fortunate enough to have been blessed with many sunny days during our autumn holidays.

Today Funchal prides itself as being Europe’s most picturesque and cleanest capital, where alongside the street markets, botanical gardens, and jacaranda lined avenues you also discover a modern, cosmopolitan rejuvenated city that is well known for its top class restaurants.

We have chosen the four star Four View Baia Hotel as our new bridge venue in Funchal. The position of this hotel is particularly good as it is just 10 minutes’ walk into the centre of Funchal. The walk is downhill but you can avoid this and the uphill return climb by taking advantage of the hotel's regular courtesy bus or the frequent public buses that pass by the hotel at regular intervals. Alternatively a taxi costs just 4 -5 euros.

The city is nestled in a natural amphitheatre facing the blue Atlantic and Four View Baia Hotel offers spectacular views across Funchal Bay & town from its restaurant, pool terrace and bar.

The upgrade to a sea view room is well worth the supplement, or you can even treat yourself to a superior sea view room which is located on the 8th floor and above! Please note balconies on all rooms are small and quite narrow, fitting two chairs side by side.

Another reason we have chosen to host our bridge holiday at the Four View Baia Hotel is because the dining is particularly good. The head chef, Octavio Freitas, is a celebrity chef in Portugal and often makes appearances on TV and radio. The delicious buffet dinners which include show cooking and international and regional cuisine are to be enjoyed in the main restaurant whilst absorbing the stunning views across the bay.

The hotel has an outdoor pool and terraces - again with amazing views - where light lunch can be taken. It also has a good indoor pool with whirlpool, sauna and steam room which can be used for a small charge of 5 euros per day.

We have managed to secure 30 double rooms for sole occupancy on this holiday and our bridge room will take a maximum of 20 tables.

During your duplicate bridge holidays nothing is obligatory, you can play in as many or as few bridge sessions as you wish. Our bridge programmes will vary according to the length of your break and in addition to playing bridge, we will always endeavour to provide a minimum of two bridge seminars for breaks of 7 days or more.

All First for Bridge holidays include bridge tuition and seminars with a varied and interesting duplicate bridge programme. Duplimated boards will be used every evening to ensure fairness and consistency. Bridge hand records will be provided.

Your duplicate bridge will usually be available twice daily, at 2.30pm and 7.45pm. The afternoon sessions usually finish between 4.45pm and 5pm, the evenings between 10.45pm - 11.15pm. The afternoons are normally given over to open pairs/teams. We endeavour to vary the evening sessions, with a balance between teams and pairs, with at least one Swiss style event during a two-week bridge break.

During all evening sessions, we utilise a duplimate machine, which means we are able to produce hand record sheets at the end of the session and when we have two or more sections, both can play the same hands. On our UK duplicate bridge breaks, provided numbers allow, we usually will lay on an "Early Bird" afternoon session on the day of arrival.

We don’t forget you are on holiday, our bridge programmes allow time for relaxation plus giving you plenty of opportunity to explore the surrounding area and relax.
