We invite you to escape to Madeira on this glorious 7 night knitting and crochet holiday in the company of Carol Meldrum. Set like an emerald amid the blue waters of the Atlantic this welcoming island with its subtropical climate is home to a wealth of splendid flora and fauna, magnificent gardens and enchanting villages. Enjoy 4 days of knitting and crochet workshops hosted by Carol in the comfort of your hotel and dip into the world of modular textiles to create your very own design. Throughout the week the focus will be on creating blocks and squares in a selection of techniques, so you can knit, crochet or mix & match to your hearts content. This project is perfect for brushing up your skills or trying something new and discovering how similar effects can be created in both knit and crochet.

Enjoy your favourite pastime amidst these beautiful surroundings and get to know this Portuguese gem on our included sightseeing programme. Traditional embroidery of Madeira dates back to colonisation in the 15th century but this craft really became established in the mid-19th century. We’ll explore the history and culture of embroidery on the island with visits to an embroidery factory and the Handicraft and Embroidery Museum. Inspired by the beauty of the island both you and your knitting and crochet skills are sure to leave Madeira refreshed and rejuvenated.

This special holiday also includes a tour of the island capital, Funchal. You’ll explore the vibrant and colourful local market and visit the village of Monte, starting point of the famous toboggan run. An included panoramic tour taking in both the east and west of Madeira will also ensure you discover all the scenic highlights and an evening of folklore and typical Madeiran cuisine will give you a taste of some of the traditions that are unique to the island too.

DAY 1 (B, D)

Morning flight from London Gatwick to Funchal. On arrival transfer to your hotel. This evening join Carol and your Tour Manager for a welcome drink and a chat about the days to come before dinner.

DAY 2 (B, D)

You’ll join an introductory tour of Funchal this morning. Visit the bustling regional market where the stalls are literally bursting with tropical fruits, vegetables, fresh fish and exotic flowers. Island handicrafts are also on sale here so this is the perfect opportunity for shopping too. Your tour continues to the village of Monte, located high above Funchal and starting point for the famous toboggan run. There will be an opportunity to take this famous ride at your own expense. You’ll also visit a renowned embroidery factory and the Handicraft and Embroidery Museum. The tour concludes with a visit to a traditional wine lodge for a tasting of the famous Madeira wine.

DAYS 3 & 4 (B, D)

Enjoy 2 days of workshops led by Carol. A project will be designed by Carol and details will be sent to you before you travel.

DAY 5 (B, D)

Today you’ll discover more scenic splendours on a full day tour with visits to the east and west of the island. Travel through lovely countryside to the Ribeiro Frio Park filled with endemic flowers and visit a trout hatchery. Continue to Santana, famous for the brightly coloured “A” framed thatched houses and their lovely gardens. Then enjoy a scenic drive to São Vicente and continue past sparkling waterfalls to the village of Porto Moniz, home to natural rock swimming pools. Later travel to the Paul da Serra and down to the villages of the sunny southwest of the island before the return journey to Funchal through more magnificent island landscape.

DAYS 6 & 7 (B, D)

Enjoy 2 more days of workshops led by Carol. During your stay you’ll also enjoy an evening of folklore and typical island cuisine at a local restaurant.

DAY 8 (B, D)
