Join Pat Archibald at the German Quilters Guild highlight of the year at an international festival of patchwork, quilts, and textile arts. The festival takes place in a different part of Germany each year and 2018 sees the show in Celle, a lovely town in North Germany.

We combine our visit with a stay in the bewitching Harz Mountains, a land of fairytales where we meet Jolanda who owns a quilt shop in this magical area. This is Germany’s secret hideaway and you will be sure to be enchanted by the little towns of steep-roofed houses and narrow, cobblestone streets, intriguing forests and rushing streams nestled below the mountains. We will discover the land that was the inspiration for the fairytales of the Brothers Grimm: Cinderella, Hansel & Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin and Little Red Riding Hood to name just a few.

DAY 1:

We take a morning flight from London Heathrow to Hannover and a short transfer to our hotel. This evening we get together for an evening meal at our hotel.

DAY 2:

Today we visit the charming historic town of Celle, one of the finest Half timbered towns in Germany where we have an included visit to the Patchworktage, the German Quilter’s Guild Show with amazing exhibitions and lots of stalls to buy that special fabric!

DAY 3:

In the Morning we travel to our hotel in the Harz Mountains, the oldest mountain range in Europe. This is such a magical and charming area full of half-timbered towns and beautiful forests. It is hard to beat for the atmosphere. We will have our first workshop with Pat at the hotel this afternoon.

DAY 4:

After breakfast this morning we visit the 'Home of Jolanda', for a visit to the patchwork and quilt shop in the spa town of Bad Lauterberg. We will also have the chance to take part in a hand appliqué workshop with Jolanda (pattern, fabric and thread included). Jolanda discovered her passion for hand quilting in England and has a keen interest in antique quilts. After many years of demonstrating hand quilting at shows, she took the plunge to open her own shop and workshop in the fairytale setting of the Harz mountains in the middle of Germany - its a must see place for every quilter! We like Jolanda’s motto: "A bed without a Quilt is like a sky without Stars".

DAY 5:

We will leave the Harz mountains for the morning and visit the town of Einbeck where we find Einbecker Blaudruck for a tour and a visit to the shop. This 'blue print' fabric is traditional to the area and will be a fascinating visit.

In the afternoon we will return to the Harz Mountains and visit 'Gorgeous' Goslar, known as Queen of the Harz. We will explore the medieval old town with its beautiful old houses and winding streets. We are sure to get lots of inspiration from this picture perfect town.

DAY 6:

This morning we have a work shop with Pat at our hotel. In the afternoon we visit the little town of Quedlinburg, another beautiful Harz town of half timbered houses before visiting a local hand glass blower.

DAY 7:

We bid farewell to this enchanting 'Hansel & Gretel' land and transfer to Hannover Airport for our return flight to London.
