VISIT SEW NORTH AND EXPERIENCE THE RUGGED BEAUTY OF COUNTY DONEGAL
You are sure to get a warm Irish welcome at Sew North, a small but very special quilting and crafting gathering in the very north of the Republic of Ireland. With a programme of workshops and demonstrations and a special display of quilts this exhibition is set amidst the spectacular landscape of County Donegal. We have also included three expert stitching and embroidery workshops with local expert Louise Kelly so you can enhance your stitching talent too. Along the way discover the wild and dramatic scenery of County Donegal, visit a renowned Donegal tweed mill and explore vibrant Derry, once the world leader in the linen and shirt industry. We also include a visit to the remarkable Giant’s Causeway, a must see for any visitor to Northern Ireland. When Sew North comes to Co Donegal there is a lively atmosphere with stitchers from all over the island of Ireland and overseas too travelling to this very beautiful part of the world. During your stay why not enjoy an evening in the town and the chance to enjoy the hospitality and ‘craic’ that the Irish are famed for.
OUR ACCOMPANYING EXPERT - LOUISE KELLY
We are delighted to welcome local textile expert Louise Kelly to our Stitchtopia tutor family. Louise resides in Derry where she creates her signature felt dolls and designs their tiny outfits. She works on projects for various magazines including Mollie Makes and her first book ‘Sew Your Own Dolls’ will be published in April. When not making dolls, Louise tutors hand stitching and embroidery classes and also travels to crafting shows with renowned Fabric Affair and their black van full of Donegal Tweed. Louise loves hand sewing, quilting, knitting, brush lettering and needle-felting. She will be creating a special stitching and embroidery project inspired by the splendid surroundings of County Donegal for this unique holiday.
SOME OF LOUISE'S WORK
Meet your Tour Manager at Heathrow Airport prior to the flight to Belfast. On arrival, travel to Derry where Louise will be waiting to introduce you to her city, the first ever UK city of Culture and the only completely walled city in the UK and Ireland. The bustling streets were once at the very heart of the linen industry and Derry was renowned for the production of some of the finest shirts in the world. Later continue to your hotel in Buncrana for a five night stay on a half board basis. Join Louise and your fellow stitchers for dinner this evening.
This morning join Louise for a hand stitching and embroidery workshop at the hotel. This afternoon cross over the border and back to Northern Ireland for a visit to the magnificent Giant’s Causeway located on the coast of County Antrim. This huge expanse of closely packed, hexagonal stone columns really does look like the handiwork of giants. This is one of Ireland’s most impressive natural wonders.
We’ll spend the day exploring beautiful County Donegal. Forming part of 2500 kms of coastline the Wild Atlantic Way hugs the shores of Donegal forming a craggy, untamed backdrop to the journey. A few famous names have holiday homes here; Sarah Jessica Parker escapes from Manhattan for an annual family holiday in this magnificent region. We’ll travel to the seaside town of Downings for a visit to McNutts, a family owned mill which produces the finest Donegal tweed. The tour then continues to the beautiful and haunting wilderness of Glenveagh National Park. Here the Derryveagh Mountains frame a valley that would not look out of place in The Lord of the Rings. Glenveagh Castle has hosted many Hollywood stars including the elusive Greta Garbo. Henry McIlhenny, the last owner of the castle, served the Philadelphia Museum of Art as Curator of Decorative Arts and his expertise in this field is evident throughout the castle. Through time, each room acquired a different character, some roughly in keeping with the period of the house, others freely inventive. A guided tour of the castle is included.
We’ll take an early drive to beautiful Malin Head this morning. Located on the Inishowen Peninsula this is the most northerly tip of the island of Ireland and is renowned for it’s epic coastal scenery and a thriving birdlife. We’ll return to Buncrana and our first visit to Sew North. This afternoon enjoy a hand stitching and embroidery workshop with Louise.
A visit to Sew North is included this morning. This afternoon enjoy a hand stitching and embroidery workshop with Louise at the hotel. Join fellow stitchers for a farewell dinner and “show and tell” this evening.
This morning depart Buncrana for the drive to Lisburn and a visit to the Linen Centre which showcases one of Ireland’s best known industries. The museum is home to a permanent exhibition 'Flax to Fabric, the story of linen'. Continue to Belfast Airport for the return flight to London.
