DISCOVER BLUE WOAD IN THE PINK CITY OF TOULOUSE

Join Janice Gunner to discover blue woad in the pink city of Toulouse - cosmopolitan, lively and a perfect blend of heritage and “art de vivre” surrounded by pretty hilltop walled villages and set between the Garonne River and the Canal du Midi in the South of France.

Be inspired by the blue woad and the beautiful wrought iron work in our workshops with Janice and discover the dyeing process in a visit to Lectoure and Revel.

With plenty of time for seeking out that special unique fabric and visits to walled towns and Chateaux, what better way to begin the summer.

Janice will be specially designing quilting workshops inspired by blue woad and the wrought iron balconies in Toulouse.

A MESSAGE FROM JANICE...

"I have fond memories of visiting Toulouse over several years of teaching in the area, and I thought it was time I shared some of the fascinating places I have been to with you! As a Shibori artist, I love all things indigo and since Pastel (Woad) is known as European indigo, we are going on the trail of this special blue dye that I also use in my work too. Come and find out about the dye that Toulouse called “Blue gold” during the Renaissance and is now used also for skin care products too! Be inspired by the textiles, scenery, chateaux, wrought iron and atmosphere and for the foodies, Toulouse is the home of Cassoulet and the Chocolate shops are heaven!"

DAY 1: LONDON - TOULOUSE

We take a morning flight from London Gatwick to Toulouse and a short transfer to our hotel, Mercure Toulouse Centre Saint Georges.

We spend some time getting to know the Pink city, in the heart of ‘Pastel’ country, with its enchanting jumble of coral coloured shop fronts and churches in the old town. This evening we get together for an evening meal at our hotel.

DAY 2: REVEL

A morning visit to Revel for Market day where we will find over 300 stalls! This is a market not to be missed, set in and around the majestic timbered medieval market hall in the small fortified town of Revel, nestling at the foot of Montagne Noir. It’s a delight to the senses as we see the colourful stalls and smell the mouth-watering local produce while listening to the locals regional rolling ‘R’! After some time at the market we will make our way to Carré Bleu de Revel for a unique dyeing workshop.

This afternoon we will visit the Museum of Dom Robert Tapestry of the 20th Century at the nearby town of Sorèze. This is a new museum in the Beneditine Abbey school and pays tribute to the know-how of the Aubusson weavers. Dom Robert a Benedictine Monk and one of the masters of the tapestry of the twentieth century was the inspiration behind this museum. His abundant and colourful work is inspired by nature and the fauna and flora of the Montagne Noire (Black Mountain).

DAY 3: TOULOUSE & CHATEAU LARÉOLE

Today we have a workshop with Janice at our hotel inspired by Pastel / Woad. In the afternoon we visit the unusual Chateau Laréole..be amazed by this architectural jewel in its green setting!

DAY 4: ALBI & CORDES SUR CIEL

Today we visit Albi, known locally as the Ville Rouge, (Red town) due to the handmade red bricks from which the remarkable medieval Cathedral is built as are many of the buildings. Wander along the maze of traffic free streets with their half timbered houses or perhaps visit the Museum of Toulouse Lautrec in the stunning Bishops Palace.

Later in the day the ‘little town in the sky’, Cordes sur Ciel is our destination - an incredible sight, perched on a hilltop above two valleys. It’s a delight to explore the narrow medieval streets and the arts and crafts shops of which there is just about every type you could imagine from potters and artists to glassmakers.

The town has a history of machine embroidery and during the Great War many thousand silk embroidered postcards were produced, which were sent to Paris and then sold to allied soldiers who sent them home to their families all around the world. A visit to the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is recommended.

DAY 5: LECTOURE

Today we will have a workshop with Janice inspired by the lovely wrought iron we will have seen around Toulouse. In the afternoon we visit Lectoure, sitting high above the River Gers, this little Spa town is home to ‘Bleu de Lectoure’ who we will visit to learn about the history and production of the Blue Woad (Pastel). Back at the hotel we will have a farewell meal together.

DAY 6: FAREWELL TO THE PINK CITY

We will have some time this morning in Toulouse for further exploration - what will you choose? The chocolate shop, the House of Violets, the Quilt shop or a local craft shop? We say farewell to Toulouse as we take an early evening flight from Toulouse to London Gatwick.
