We'd like to invite you to join us for our second overseas quilting retreat! Our partners at have arranged for Jennie and Angela to join you on the beautiful island of Madeira. Spend an incredible week at the 4-star Hotel Golden Residence on a bed and breakfast basis with a welcome dinner in the hotel and farewell dinner in a traditional folklore restaurant.

Expand your quilting skills and enjoy the company of your fellow quilters as you explore the island and capital city of Funchal on two included excursions. An experienced tour manager will be on hand to ensure all goes well and you make the most of your break.

“What a wonderful week we will have in Madeira, you will revel in the wealth of fabric fun and fabrications plus enjoy the wonderful scenery of a beautiful island. Weather will be warm, as will the welcome by all. Knowing how good Malta was in 2017 and how much the students enjoyed themselves as did the tutors, Madeira will be an equally marvellous mix of enjoyable entertainment and a true learning experience”

Jennie Rayment is a world renowned quilt teacher, lecturer, author of nine quilt books and numerous patterns. In addition to teaching her original creations and novel designs at all USA premium quilt shows and indeed at our Festival of Quilts, Jennie also has her own Quilting Classroom show monthly on national television.

From Houston to Qatar, Durban to Melbourne, Auckland and many other international cities, Jennie has wowed them all with her superb teaching style and hilarious lectures all laced with wit, charm and professional expertise. Often working in calico, she manipulates and manoeuvres material into magical formations that appear deviously difficult yet are oh sew simple to produce. Her techniques are suitable for all abilities and can be incorporated into quilts, garments, home decor, bags and boxes. In her field, she is unique.

“The group can experience a stress free, fun time in the sun and the opening up of a completely new method of creating patterns for any future project. I am looking forward to seeing the surprised looks on the participants faces when they see the brilliant original designs they can produce with so little effort. As everyone’s designs will be different and possibilities are endless, they will also get great inspiration from seeing what other people do with the same instructions. (Anyone feeling ‘artistically challenged’ especially welcome)”

Angela is an internationally recognised quilter and teacher, having won awards at all major UK and US quilt shows, and demonstrated her techniques in the UK, US, Spain…even New Zealand.

She has published over 15 books and DVDs while also finding the time to develop 3 design drafting tools. The subject matter of her books varies from Celtic design, through geometric, floral and perspective patchwork to photo realistic applique and innovative techniques using furnishing fabric. More recently, she developed a new ‘Surprising Silhouettes’ technique. All techniques are machine sewn.

DAY 1:

Board your early morning British Airways flight from London Gatwick to Funchal. On arrival, transfer by private coach to your hotel, the 4-star Golden Residence Hotel. This evening you are invited to join Jennie, Angela and your tour manager for a welcome drink where you will be able to meet our tutors and your fellow quilters before dinner in the hotel restaurant.

DAY 2:

This morning, enjoy an introduction to Madeira's capital and the charming village of Monte. Your tour includes a visit to the renowned embroidery factory and museum, time to browse Funchal's local market selling exotic flowers, tropical fruits, vegetables, fish and local craftwork from the island. The tour will then take you to Monte, which is situated high above the capital and famed for its beautiful church and public gardens. Whilst here you might like to take an exhilarating toboggan ride through Monte's steep, narrow streets in wicker sleds steered by men traditionally dressed in white clothes and straw hats using their rubber-soled boots as brakes.

This afternoon, your workshops with Jennie and Angela will begin in the hotel. During the course of the retreat you will spend equal time with each tutor working on Jennie’s “Amazing Manipulations with Twiddling and Fiddling” and Angela’s “Surprising Silhouettes” quilting projects. Guests will be split into two groups, based in two separate rooms and will change tutors on Day 5.

DAY 3:

Today will be spent sewing with your quilting experts.

DAY 4:

During today’s full day panoramic tour you will discover more scenic splendours with visits to the east and west of the island. Enjoy the stunning mountainous landscapes as you drive to Ribeiro Frio, a natural park with endemic flowers and a trout hatchery. In Santana, see the brightly coloured 'A' shaped framed house with thatched roofs and colourful gardens. From the village of Sao Vicente take the coastal route to Porto Moniz with its famous rock pools. You then ascend to the high plateau Paul da Serra before descending down to the villages of sunny southwest Madeira and returning to Funchal.

This evening Angela Madden will entertain you with 'Poetry about Quilting...and life in general'.

DAY 5:

This morning time will be spent finishing your project as your first workshop concludes. After lunch, you will switch tutors and begin your second workshop.

This evening Jennie invites you to join her for a magical mystical tour of twiddles, fiddles, nips and tucks – 'Totally Tucked Up'.

DAY 6:

Sewing will continue this morning followed by an afternoon at leisure for independent shopping and sightseeing. Alternatively you might like to join an optional 'Levada Walk and Afternoon tea' excursion. During this one hour easy and flat walk, you can take in the lovely views, flowers, valleys and countryside on display before visiting one of the habitants houses where you will be welcomed with a fabulous afternoon tea accompanied by sweet potato homemade bread, sandwiches, cakes, biscuits, fruit and a delicious dessert!

This evening, Jennie and Angela will host a ‘Show and Tell’.

DAY 7:

Your last full day in Madeira will be spent sewing where you will be able to finish your project before the workshop concludes late afternoon.

This evening, join Jennie, Angela and your fellow quilters for a farewell dinner in a typical restaurant situated high above Funchal. It's a chance to try the typical and very delicious 'Espetada' - marinated beef cooked over an open fire on a laurel skewer. This Madeiran speciality is served with delicious golden fried maize 'Milho Frito', homemade bread with garlic butter, green salad and fries. Wine, water and soft drinks are included. A local folklore group will ensure your final evening is a very enjoyable one!

DAY 8:

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before the transfer to Funchal airport for the lunchtime British Airways flight back to London Gatwick.

Jennie Rayment: "Amazing Manipulations with Twiddling and Fiddling"

In this course you will play with a wide range of tactile and textural designs. Indulge in some origami, discover how to fold, roll, tweak and twitch squares and strips into delectable formations ideally suitable for quilts, cushions and bags. It's fun and frolic with fabric and fabulous nifty notions, hints, tips and easy peasy ways to create amazing masterpieces on the machine. You will be in the caring hands of magical mistress of material.

Angela Madden: “Surprising Silhouettes”

Cutting paper is a fun, fast and brilliant way to 'discover' unique designs for quilts. We will add a fabric twist to this traditional Japanese idea, enabling you to create the design of your choice - themed or abstract, big or small, simple or detailed. Easy machine stitching will complete. Everyone gets a different result, and there will be multiple possibilities for assembling your particular design. Angela's technique is ideal for experienced quilters or beginners, confident designers or the 'artistically terrified' and guarantees amazing results every time. In fact, the only challenge in the day is deciding which of the many alternatives you like best.

DAY 4: “Poetry about Quilting…and life in general” by Angela Madden
Instead of doing sensible things like crosswords and Sudoku to fend off Alzheimer's, Angela writes 'poetry' which she will share with us. These poems are about the world of Quilting and life in general … things that strike her or annoy her. Angela describes her poetry as 'more McGonagall than Wordsworth!' We describe it as wonderfully entertaining.

DAY 5: “Totally Tucked Up” by Jennie Rayment
Come with Jennie on a magical mystical tour of twiddles, fiddles, nips and tucks. Marvel at her amazing masterpieces, giggle at the tales of travel and other trials and tribulations, enjoy a hilarious yet highly educational evening with this intriguingly racy raconteur of strip, show and tell!
