The Benefits of Knitting and Patchwork

We all know the theraputic value of kitting, patchwork, crochet etc, and all enjoy being part of a group. So, it was intersting to see the young midwives on BBC’s ‘Call the Midwife’ knitting squares for a blanket on Sunday. Initially the younger ones seemed reluctant but they soon got into it and the shared knitting experience allowed them to bond and share a common task. It was particularly touching when the finished blanket was used to cover one of their colleagues (played by the superb Miranda Hart) during her difficult labour. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01b2w74
On a completely different subject, Tracey Chevalier (author of ‘The Girl With The Pearl Earring’ amongst others) discovered the joys of quilting when researching for her new book ‘The Last Runaway’.

Stitchtopia comments

Here are just a few of the comments we have received after Stitchtopia at Wyboston Lakes:

‘Stitchtopia has been fab. Really looking forward to next year! Thank you everyone who has organised this event and Thank you to everyone participating and making it such fun. What a friendly bunch. Safe journey everyone and especially to our overseas visitors.’

‘We’ve arrived back home to the bitter North!! It’s great to be away but it’s also great to get back home and see your house (and stash) still intact :) We both had a wonderful time…it was lovely to see folk from the Norway trip and also to meet new people too. Thanks too any of the tutors who may read the messages in this group, thanks to Rowan, Arena and esp to David  who kept popping in and out of all the classes to make sure we were all ok. I think Arena are a marvellous company and I look forward to travel with them again on the Iceland trip, fingers, legs, toes, needles crossed…well maybe not needles as then I wouldn’t be able to knit!
Oh, and for those that saw me knitting that green waistcoat (a lot) during the week….I finished it in the car on the way home with just a couple if miles left to home….so I managed a few pattern repeats on my second KSH wristlets from this morning…..
Safe journey home to all those still to travel and happy knitting, hooking, quilting and stitching.’

‘Hi to all that went to Stitchtopia.
Met lots of lovely ladies and what I noticed today was noise. It was so peaceful and full of kindred spirits. Not just the alcoholic type!
I had the most amazing time and have already expressed an interest for next year. If anyone reads this and wonders if they should go then just do it. Venue great, good food, fantastic company and masses to learn.’

‘Hi all friends!
A large Swedish TACK (thanks) to all of you for your friendly reception during my Stitichtopia holiday. “Tack” is directed to organizers as well as experts and of course to all participating friendly knitters and crafters! You have been so kind and invited me all the time in discussions and knitting chatter. I’m so happy for my stay and my conclusions, except that I learned a lot of new things about knitting and crochet and found new friends, is that knitting bring people together in a very peaceful and creative way! I think it is an important thread that could be further developed!

Hopefully I enclose a photo of my creations from Wyboston! I’m already looking forward to attending in Stitchtopia next year, or at some other of Arena Travels holiday trips.
See you!’

‘It was fantastic to see you all and HUUUUUGE thanks to Arena.
Needless to say I set one foot in my office and decided to go home and design a tea cosy for my mum in double knitting. Technically, for me, it IS still working.
Hope to see you all again soon.’

‘Had a great time and must echo everyone’s thanks to Arena and all the tutors, plus all the lovely Stitchtopians who made it such fun. Have just finished unpacking all my knitty things and embroidery too, feeling in a warm creative glow back in Cardiff. The main drawback is that my list of things that I absolutely must knit next has grown exponentially after seeing the lovely garments people were wearing. Groans from my family who think I surely must have had enough .. love to all, hope to see you again soon.’

‘Thank you to all involved: Tutors, participants, organisers and hospitality. I have had a wonderful time. It’s been great putting faces to names I’ve read about, either on Ravelry or in various publications. I’ve tried things I wouldn’t have tried otherwise. I’ve seen other people try things I want to have a go at next year.
Hope everyone arrives home safely. Look forward to meeting some people again in Assisi, or next year at Stitchtopia 2: the craftiness continues.’

‘Last morning at Stitchtopia……back to the outside world . Thank you to Arena, the wonderful tutors and last but not least to all the participants who have been so friendly…roll on next year.
Safe home everyone.’
