Art Along the Romantic Rhine

5 June 2022

8 days from £3,398pp

This voyage will take in four of the six countries through which the Rhine flows, beginning in stylish Basel, Switzerland’s capital of art and culture, and winding up through France, Germany and The Netherlands, concluding in Amsterdam
As ‘Old Father Rhine’ wends his way through the heart of Western Europe, he imbues the surrounding landscape with a beauty and serenity that has inspired painters and poets alike. Indeed, the Middle Rhine was described by the Romantics as ‘the landscape of the soul’ but its beauty owes a debt to man as much as it does nature, as the rich density of cultural heritage along the Rhine attests. One of Europe’s most reliable conduits of trade and transport in the pre-motor era, the upper reaches of the river linked northern Europe to the Venetian and Genoese trade routes at the westerly tip of the Silk Road. At the river’s end, major ports such as Amsterdam, Bruges, Antwerp and Rotterdam connected Western Europe with the world beyond. The river’s vital role in the development of Europe helped the settlements along its banks prosper; picturesque towns, handsome cities and, perhaps most famously, the romantic hilltop castles and fortresses that pepper the UNESCO-designated 65km-stretch of the Middle Rhine Valley. There is, of course, no better way to explore this landscape than by water, which affords the scenery of this magical part of the world the languorous appreciation it deserves. Our voyage will take in four of the six countries through which the Rhine flows, beginning in stylish Basel, Switzerland’s capital of art and culture, and winding up through France, Germany and The Netherlands to Amsterdam, a fittingly handsome maritime city in which to conclude our journey.
