Since becoming capital of Spain in 1561 under Philip II, Madrid has developed into one of the world’s greatest treasure troves of art. Both the Habsburg and Bourbon dynasties embellished the city and employed the finest artists to project an image of princely magnificence. The 17th century saw the rise of a Golden Age, fuelled by riches from the New World. This largely courtly concern with culture, particularly painting, continued into the 18th and 19th centuries. When in 1819 the Prado opened the Royal Collections’ doors to the public, it instantly manifested itself as one of the world’s richest museums of European painting. But the Prado’s masterpieces are certainly not the city’s only treasure: along the promenade of the Paseo del Prado, it is joined by the eclectic Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection and the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid’s matchless museum of Spanish 20th-century art. Beyond this plethora of outstanding museums, the Royal Palace and the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales are spectacular historic structures located in the heart of the old town.

A short drive south of Madrid is Toledo, often considered a convenient day trip option from the capital but with so much more to reveal than can be appreciated in just a few short hours. The historic capital of Spain is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and its beautifully preserved heart reflects more than 2,000 years of history. Known as the ‘City of Three Cultures’, the peaceful co-existence of Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities is mirrored in the rich mosaic of architectural styles that make up the old city. This is also the city that El Greco chose to make his home, flourishing as an artist here and finding widespread appreciation. With stays in both Madrid and Toledo, this study tour offers the chance to compare and contrast capitals present and past, showcasing Spanish painting from El Greco, Velázquez and Goya to Picasso.
