Get Hooked in Florence – report by Carol Meldrum

What more could you ask for, a trip to Florence with like minded folk, dedicated to crochet and knitting, chatting and swapping stories, passing on skills and generally having a good time!

We flew into Pisa from London, then a short coach trip on towards our luxury hotel in the heart of the city where we would be based for the next 5 days. Not wanting to waste any time we ventured out to explore our surroundings, track down a few yarn stores and grab a bite to eat.

After a restful evening and an amazing buffet style breakfast we were all set for our morning walking tour arranged by Arena. The local tour guide really brought the streets to life, with stories of Michelangelo, the Medici family and other famous Florentines, along with the do’s and don’ts of picking a good gelato!

The rather grand Raffaello Room was our workshop venue in the hotel, a wonderful space, with plenty of elbow room, bundles of yarn and goodie bags, we were all set up for the next few days of creativity. We also had the opportunity to visit the nearby Prato Textile Museum, an old textile mill housing collections dating back the 13th century along with more contemporary textiles, it certainly sparked the imagination and made you think about the connections with the textile industry back in the UK.

All too soon it was time to head home, but with one last stop along the way to Pisa. Nothing can prepare you for the leaning tower and the way it almost peaks around the other buildings. The visit was made all the more special with a local tour guide explaining the history behind Pisa and everything leans including the trees!

It was a fantastic trip and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a visit to the area. It’s the perfect place for a short break with so much to see and marvel at. The locals are extremely friendly, the food is amazing and with everything so close together you soon get the lay of the land and enjoy exploring all the side streets.

A huge thank you to everyone for making it such a memorable trip, to Arena for a wonderful itinerary and to Helen our Tour Guide for making sure everything ran smoothly and keeping us topped up with coffee!

We are pleased to announce that Carol will be tutoring on our knitting and crochet holiday to the West of Ireland. Carol’s trips are extremely popular and tend to book-up quickly. If you would like to join Carol on the emerald isle next year, we recommend you reserve your place soon!
