British Isles Discovery Knitting & Crochet Cruise

On this fascinating springtime cruise discover picturesque harbours, historic castles and ancient sites on the optional excursions as well as included and exclusive yarn-related tours in Amsterdam, Invergordon, Orkney and Guernsey.

Join our expert, Sophia Reed, for two full day and two half day workshops, plus plenty of time for social knitting and crochet. Your projects will draw on the traditions of the places you visit, so the techniques you’ll be covering will include textured gansey stitches from Holland and the Channel Islands, lace and fair Isle from the Scottish Isles, Aran and cables from Ireland and crochet from Honfleur, since it is believed that crochet was first developed in France. The workshops will provide an in-depth focus to the various techniques.

A message from our expert:

I am delighted to be teaching on this exciting journey around the British Isles which promises to provide so many places of textile history and design inspiration.

Drawing on my experience of working with a company who produce Dutch Gansey sweaters, our first full day workshop offers the choice of exploring these textured knit designs together with the contrasting colour work of crochet motifs inspired by the flowers of Amsterdam, including the African Flower pattern and flowers in squares. There will be the opportunity to choose from many different patterns and techniques, featuring beading, embellishment and professional finishing in both knitting and crochet. This workshop also looks at the design process and different ways of joining the motifs together to make home textiles such as blankets and cushions or fashion accessories: for example, you could choose to make a number of hexagonal crochet African Flower motifs and ‘join-as-you-go’ to make an exclusive bag with a feature beaded crochet button.

Looking at colour-work in a more unusual way, our first half-day workshop features Fair-isle Tunisian crochet which is a fun project for knitters and crocheters alike as it is a unique combination of both crafts. If you discover a passion for Tunisian crochet, you will be able to learn more Tunisian crochet stitches, including a pattern for a beautiful Tunisian Entrelac scarf, during further workshop sessions on our cruise.

Inspired by the Emerald Isles, our third project references Irish Linen heritage by creating exquisite but versatile crochet lace edgings that can be used for traditional tableware, towels or bedding. We will look at making these 100% cotton edgings both directly on fabric and also ‘by-the-yard’.- Sophia Reed
