Virtual Crafting - Introduction to making a small Kantha Quilted Jewellery Bag

In this workshop you will learn Indian Kantha Quilting Techniques. This is a lovely relaxing hand stitching technique that you will work onto your choice of fabrics using your choice of an elephant or bird motif or perhaps both. I will demonstrate the stitching, show you how to easily turn this stitched panel into a small drawstring bag that could hold jewellery or some sewing tools. The bag could be entirely made by hand or you could machine stitch to speed up the bag making element of the work.

• One 10” square of plain fabric onto which you will be embroidering your motif - this could be cotton or silk
• One 10” square of calico –this will be used as a backing for your stitching and will not be seen in the final project
• One 10” square of patterned cotton fabric that will be used as the lining of the bag
• 50 cm of narrow colour coordinated ribbon
• Selection of embroidery threads in your chosen colours (stranded cottons work well or if you don’t have these you can use machine threads doubled)
• Hand embroidery needles.(choose a size to suit your choice of threads)
• Scissors
• Chalk marking pencil or a marking tool that will work on your plain fabric
• Sewing machine – this is optional as the entire project can be made by hand. If you prefer to use your sewing machine, then have a bobbin and thread to match your fabrics
