HORTUS goes to Varengeville-sur-Mer

08 September 2023

4 days from £2,595pp

Let our expert host Adam Wilkinson and Hortus contributor, Kirsty Fergusson, whisk you on a weekend away to the leafy village of Varengeville-sur-Mer to visit the region’s classical and contemporary gardens.
  • Stay in a 4-star hotel overlooking the sea
  • Meet the next generation of talented gardeners
  • Discover both heritage and contemporary gardens
  • Explore the world’s most comprehensive collection of hydrangeas

Just five miles from Dieppe on the Alabaster Coast in Upper Normandy, Varengeville-sur-Mer has enjoyed a long association with artists, gardeners, and aristocrats. Since 1898, when Sir Edwin Lutyens arrived to design Le Bois des Moutiers for Guillaume Mallet, this small leafy village has developed strong links with the British garden community which continues today. We will be visiting the garden of Robert Mallet, grandson of Guillaume, to see his exceptional collection of hydrangeas, as well as the late Princess Sturdza’s renowned creation at Le Vasterival. We also take time to meet the new generation of talented gardeners and plantsmen in their very private woodland gardens of great merit.
