EBU Autumn Congress, Turkey

Join First for Bridge and the English Bridge Union for a fantastic week in the Turkish town of Side on this EBU Overseas Congress. With its cobbled winding streets and pretty harbour, the Old Town of Side is delightful. The ancient site is perfect for leisurely exploration with its Temples of Apollo and Athena, and the remains of the Roman Baths that house an impressive collection of artefacts.

We’ll be staying at The Sense De Luxe Hotel which opened its doors in 2014 and has a lovely fresh and modern feel throughout. In addition to the excellent location (just 4km from the harbour and close to nearby shops), facilities are truly fantastic at this venue. You can relax on the private beach, enjoying the complimentary sunbeds, umbrellas and towels, and a few steps away from the all-inclusive beach bar & café. Or for those who prefer the pool, the hotel boasts several options including a large outdoor pool, relaxing adult-only pool, and even an indoor pool with Turkish bath, sauna and fitness centre – all included in your package.

After working up an appetite from these excellent facilities, the all-inclusive board will offer you endless choice; from breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks to Sunday brunch, afternoon patisseries, ice-creams and midnight soup! You can also enjoy local hot, soft and alcoholic drinks until midnight, and in addition to the main restaurant, beach café and bars, the hotel offers 3 a la carte restaurants - Italian, Fish and Turkish (bookable once weekly).

We have also included two fantastic excursions in our package:

We visit Antalya, the eastern gateway to the Turquoise Coast and enjoy a guided walking tour of this beautiful old town, as well as visiting the Duden Waterfall and enjoying a boat trip around the harbour and visit to the leather centre.

Our second excursion takes us to Alanya where we go up to the castle for a panoramic view across the red tiled ottoman villas and wide beaches. We enjoy a boat trip around the bay and 2 hours free time in this popular resort.

Chris and Linda Benneworth

Linda and Chris have been married since 1971, having met while they were teaching at the same high school.

Following successful careers in education they retired in the late nineties, when they started directing together, working at first in local and more recently in overseas congresses. They ran the North Eastern Bridge Association Congress for a number of years in Otterburn, Consett and Gateshead, an event with a deserved reputation for friendliness. Since 2019, they have worked as hosts and director at EBU overseas congresses in Athens, Sicily and Rome. They even play together occasionally to ensure there are full tables. Chris is an EBU national director who also teaches others the art of directing and Linda is a qualified County director.

They both believe that bridge is a great game which is meant to be enjoyed; a holiday is the perfect way of doing that.

Christine MacFarlane

Christine has been on the EBU panel since 2010 and has assisted with running many congresses over the years; more recently concentrating on the Really Easy and Progressive events to encourage newer players to play competitively. She runs her own Bridge club in Bath and has been teaching Bridge there since 2007. She has introduced many players to this wonderful game. She has experience of running Bridge holidays and working on cruise ships as the Bridge Instructor/Director. She believes Bridge should be both sociable and challenging.

Christine is originally from New Zealand but now lives in Somerset with her husband Stewart. When not directing or teaching Bridge, their new hobby (since lockdown) is exploring the old railway lines of Somerset.

Our 'meet us at the airport' option allows you to book your own transport independently and choose one of the many flights available from several UK airports.

Transfers will be included on our specific arrival and departure dates. If you choose to arrive or depart on a different day, there may be an additional supplement charged to cover your transfer costs.

It is possible to extend your autumn break in Turkey, if you would like a longer stay, or to take advantage of regional flights. We have secured some additional rooms in the hotel to allow you to add up to seven additional nights before or after our holiday dates at the following prices:

Overview

The 5-star The Sense de Luxe Hotel only opened in 2014 and offers 374 modern spacious rooms and excellent facilities. It is very well located in Side, just 4km from the picturesque harbour which is easily reached by very regular local buses, or maybe the more energetic would enjoy a coastal walk stopping at a beachfront café en route to enjoy the beautiful sea views. You will find a good selection of shops in the vicinity of the hotel.

Hotel Facilities & Amenities

In the spacious grounds you will find a large outdoor pool and a relaxing adult pool. Sun worshippers will also enjoy the private beach with its fine sand and shallow waters, and its own pier and complimentary sun loungers, umbrellas and beach towels and all-inclusive beach café/ restaurant.

The hotel also boasts an indoor pool and an excellent spa where you pay for treatments, but have complimentary use of the Turkish Bath, sauna and fitness centre.

Other amenities include a boutique, minimarket, hairdressers, and beauty parlour. Activities include beach volley, aerobics, table tennis, water polo and billiards.
