Lake Lucerne and the Glacier Express

On this tour of magnificent mountains and grand gorges, you’ll get lost in the dramatic Swiss landscapes as we cruise Lake Lucerne and travel across the Alps. Enjoy a ride on the world’s slowest express train – the Glacier Express. The historic carriages of the Stanserhorn railway date back to 1893, and they will take you halfway up the mountain before transferring to CabriO, the world’s first open-top aerial cable car. The railway climbing Mount Pilatus – which sometimes reaches an angle of 48 percent – grants wonderful views across the picturesque mountains. Alongside these excursions, we give you plenty of time at leisure to explore Lucerne, with an included Swiss pass offering travel and museum admission discounts.

Itinerary

We journey from London to Paris by Eurostar, followed by our onward connection to Lucerne. On arrival, we take the short walk to our hotel, where we check in for a relaxing evening.

We enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning before having free time to explore Lucerne. Considered to be one of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities, Lucerne occupies a stunning position on the banks of Lake Lucerne, where the River Reuss meets the lake. Colourful pitched roof buildings perch on the edges, framed by the surrounding mountain range. The old town boulevard lies between city hall and Chapel Bridge along the River Reuss. Lined with restaurants and bars, it’s a beautiful spot to take a stroll and enjoy the atmosphere.

We join our Lake Lucerne cruise at lunchtime and embark on a relaxing journey, enjoying first class seating. Admire the stunning views of the lake and the magnificent mountain backdrop as you sit down to a two-course lunch with a drink onboard. The rest of the day is free to explore at your leisure.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before we take the train from Lucerne to Andermatt. From here, we board the Glacier Express for a memorable journey to Chur.

The Glacier Express, known as the world’s slowest express train, travels across the Alps. The entire route takes roughly eight hours, and passes through 91 tunnels and over 291 bridges. The landscape looks very dramatic in the Rhine Gorge between Ilanz and Reichenau, where the river carves deep into the white rocks, and it’s easy to see why this region is often referred to as ‘The Grand Canyon of Switzerland’. After Reichenau, the train will reach Chur, the capital of the canton of Graubünden and the largest town along the route. Here, we take the train from Chur back to Lucerne and enjoy a relaxing evening at the hotel.

The Glacier Express

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the hotel before joining a train ride from Lucerne, around the lake, and to Stans. Here, we join the Stanserhorn funicular railway, with timber carriages dating back to 1893. The funicular takes us to the midpoint station of Kalti at an altitude of 710m. We then board the world’s first cabrio cable car to an altitude of just under 1900m. At the top, the star-shaped Rondorama restaurant has a revolving platform, and there’s also a mountain marmot zoo! You’ll have some free time at the summit before we make our way back to Lucerne for a relaxing evening.

Kalti Cable Car

Today’s included excursion takes us to Lucerne’s iconic mountain, Mount Pilatus. We enjoy a spectacular ride on the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, starting with a journey to Alpnachstad, where we board the cogwheel train that will take us up the mountain. At Pilatus Kulm, we are greeted with breathtaking panoramic views across Lake Lucerne and the surrounding mountain peaks.

After time to soak up the sweeping Alpine views, we make our descent by cable car and gondola to Kriens. We then take a bus back to Lucerne and enjoy a farewell dinner together in a local restaurant this evening. This is a great opportunity to share our favourite memories from this unforgettable holiday!
