In this workshop Sallieann will demonstrate the basics of making a cotton rope basket from starting the coil to creating the shape and finishing the basket. The workshop will also cover:
  • Sourcing and selecting rope, needles, threads and fabric that lend themselves well to the production process
  • Dealing with sewing machine set up, stitch size, foot choice, throat plates and clearance issues
  • Basket hardware – screws. Rivets and leather tabs
  • Brief discussion around creating bags and handles in rope (other samples shared)
  • Dyeing rope, variegated thread – more samples shared
  • Wrapping rope with fabric  
You are welcome to sew along, or you may just prefer to make notes and relax with a drink! 
You will need: 
  • 20 metres of 5.5mm cotton clothesline
  • 0.5 metres of fabric
  • 2” square of leather for the tab
  • Chicago Screw 12mm
  • Thread of your choice
  • General sewing kit and sewing machine with open toe foot
