Itinerary

We journey from London to Paris by Eurostar, followed by our onward rail connections to Interlaken. Interlaken lies in the Bernese Oberland between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, with the breathtaking backdrop of the three mighty mountains, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. On arrival at Interlaken Ost station, we walk to the hotel where we stay for five nights.

After a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, we take the train from Interlaken Ost to Brienz and embark on an introductory walking tour. We walk along Lake Brienz and through woods, meadows and pastures to Hofstetten, where there’s the opportunity to have some lunch at leisure.

We include entrance to the Ballenberg Open Air Museum, which began in 1978 with 16 characteristic Swiss buildings. Today, the museum boasts over 100 residential and agricultural buildings from all over Switzerland, spread out over 66-hectares. The museum is home to historic buildings, kitchens, chambers and living rooms which illustrate rural life in Switzerland. It has been brought alive by the original, indigenous plants and crops that are cultivated, plus over 200 native livestock species. Traditional handicrafts are kept alive in the workshops of the open-air museum; basket-weaving, forging, braiding, spinning, weaving and carving are just some of the many handicrafts on show every day, and you’ll be able to look over the experts' shoulders or join in yourself!

We conclude the day with a Lake Brienz cruise back to Interlaken.

Harder Kulm Funicular Ride Guided Walk

We travel eastwards today by train to Meiringen, where after a short onward train ride, we will take stroll through the dramatic Aare Gorge. The Aare Gorge is situated in the Haslital Valley in the Central Alps, which stretches from the Grimsel Pass to Lake Brienz. The valley of the lower Haslital is separated from the upper valley by a rock formation and over thousands of years, the River Aare eroded a path through this rock formation resulting in a gorge which is 1,400 metres long and up to 200 metres deep. The gorge is a wonderful way to experience nature with many paths and tunnels to walk through. Next, we will embark on an exhilarating guided walk above Grindelwald, from Grosse Scheidegg to the First cable car station, where we will descend to Grindelwald. From here, enroute back to Interlaken, we will take the dramatically thrilling Eiger Flyer cable car to Grindelwald, where we have a close encounter with the North face of the Eiger returning via Kleine Scheidegg and Lauterbrunnen.
