As with all of our club standard First for Bridge holidays, this holiday uses duplimated boards during the bridge sessions, awards Masterpoints, provide hand records and are licensed by the English Bridge Union. This holiday is suitable for those who play regularly at club level.

Join us for our very first “Bridge & Rail” UK holiday based at the gateway to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. In addition to playing duplicate bridge every evening and one afternoon, we take you across the classic countryside by steam train on three different days and visit a graded castle. We'll also enjoy a leisurely cruise on one of the most scenic waterways in Yorkshire - it’s a winning combination!

Make your own way to the Rendezvous Hotel in Skipton and meet our bridge director and host before dining and evening bridge.

This morning we spend time exploring Skipton where we board a traditional canal boat for our included cruise along the most scenic waterways in Yorkshire, the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. There’s fascinating stories of how the canal delivered the lifeblood of the industrial revolution through Yorkshire. This afternoon you can either relax and enjoy the hotels superb leisure facilities or join in our afternoon bridge session. Dinner and evening bridge.

This morning you are welcome to attend our morning bridge seminar before we enjoy a ride on the charming Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway. The preserved railway was part of the former Midland Railway route from Skipton to Ilkley. On arrival at Bolton Abbey station, our coach picks us up and takes us to the delightful quaint town of Haworth, which was home to the Bronte Sisters. You have time to take a lunch break and explore the historic, cobbled Main Street or visit the Bronte Parsonage Museum (entrance not included).

Today we enjoy a return journey on the Settle Carlisle Railway so you can sit back and admire the scenery from both directions. The line pays testament to the ingenuity of 19th century railway engineers as it travels over 72 miles through the North Pennines, Eden Valley and Yorkshire Dales, crossing 19 viaducts and passing through 14 tunnels. The Ribblehead viaduct is a particular highlight with 24 arches and a highest point of 32 metres. There will be plenty of time for you to spend in Carlisle with free time for lunch and to explore this lovely city. We return to our hotel for dinner and evening bridge.

After breakfast we depart our hotel for our visit to Ripley Castle, a Grade I listed 14th-century country house where we take a guided tour of the castle rooms which include the Library, Drawing rooms, Tower room and Knights Chamber. After the tour there is time to explore the magnificent walled gardens where a collection of specimen trees from around the world can be found. We depart Ripley Castle for Ripon where you will have free time for lunch and to explore the imposing cathedral which dates back to the 7th century, wander around the many fascinating museums, and bustling market square or take a walk canal-side. On our return journey to Skipton we stop at Grassington, a most beautiful village in Upper Wharfedale, with stunning scenery and riverside walks renowned for its good shops and cafes. We return to our hotel for dinner and final evening bridge session.

After breakfast you are free to check out our hotel and depart at leisure.

Please note we cannot guarantee all our rail journeys will be steam hauled.
