Join us on a Journey of Remembrance honouring the bravery and sacrifice of those who died in the historic struggle for Southern Italy. The Campaign in Italy was brutal and costly, with much of it fought on mountainous terrain. While Operation Overlord, the codename given for the invasion of France in June ’44, was in its final planning stages, Allied forces landed in Italy. As they advanced towards Rome, they engaged in some of the hardest fighting in Europe in what was yet another pivotal turning point in bringing an end to WWII.

This tour honours those who fought and died as they came ashore at Salerno before confronting the Gustav Line, which crossed Italy south of Rome. Considered by some to be as desperate as the Battle of Passchendale in WWI, soldiers came under heavy artillery fire as they fought in despicable conditions on exposed mountainous slopes, knee deep in mud and snow. Unfortunately, the cost to human life was high, as can clearly be seen on visit to the beautifully maintained World War II cemeteries where we remember the fallen and pay our respects.

This five-day tour to Salerno & Monte Cassino is for veterans of the Italian Campaign with up to two family members/carers to travel to Italy under the LIBOR Fines funding scheme. To assist with travel arrangements there is an option of including a pre and/or post tour overnight stay in a hotel near London Gatwick airport. In order to qualify for places under the scheme, the veteran must fulfil the eligibility criteria detailed later.

Places on this tour are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis with priority given to veterans who have not travelled on a LIBOR funded tour previously.

You have the option of an overnight stay with breakfast at an hotel near London’s Gatwick Airport. Rooms will be available for check-in from mid-afternoon. Dinner is not included but there is a restaurant should you wish to dine in the hotel.

Overnight guests can enjoy a leisurely breakfast before a short coach transfer to London Gatwick’s South Terminal. Should you prefer not to extend your tour you can make your way directly to London Gatwick and meet the group there in readiness for the mid-afternoon flight to Naples. On arrival we have a private coach transfer to the coastal town of Paestum where we check-in to the Hotel Ariston. Situated on the Bay of Paestum and with its own private beach, the hotel is both a comfortable and relaxing retreat for our 2-night stay. A light dinner will be served on our late evening arrival.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the hotel before joining the coach for today’s tour focusing on the landings in the Gulf of Salerno by US and British Forces in September 1943. Codenamed Operation Avalanche, it was undoubtedly one of the most impressive amphibious operations in history. We’ll visit the US Forces landing areas around Paestum before driving north along the coast to the landing areas of the British Forces around Salerno. A private Service of Remembrance at Salerno Commonwealth War Cemetery is a chance to pay our respects to those who lost their lives in the landings and fighting that followed, and those whose graves were brought in from a wide area of south western Italy. There’ll be time at leisure in the harbour area for lunch (own expense) before we explore the landing areas and operations of the Commandos and US Rangers including the large circular tobacco factory that acted like a ready-made fortress and was the site of fierce battles to control the complex. Return to our hotel where dinner will be served.

After breakfast we’ll check-out of the hotel and drive to Minturno positioned on the very edge of the German winter defensive position known as the Gustav Line. See areas where British Forces crossed the River Garigliano in January 1944 and visit Minturno War Cemetery where many who paid the ultimate sacrifice have been laid to rest. We’ll pay our respects with a private Service of Remembrance. Continue to the coastal town of Terracina and check-in to the River Palace Hotel for a 2-night stay. Join fellow veterans staying in the hotel for dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Cassino War Cemetery is the final resting place of more than 4,270 Commonwealth servicemen who lost their lives in the Second World War. Within the cemetery the Cassino Memorial commemorates more than 4,040 Commonwealth servicemen who took part in the campaign and whose graves are not known. Today we’ll honour the fallen in a special Service of Remembrance commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Italian Campaign.

Lunch today is included. We’ll dine with other veterans in the Restaurante Al Boschetto in Cassino. In the late afternoon we return to Terracino for a farewell dinner served in the hotel restaurant.

After breakfast we’ll check out of the hotel and drive to Anzio where in January 1944 Allied troops landed behind German lines. Visits include Beach Head War Cemetery and Anzio War Cemetery where we’ll pay our respects to the fallen. After free time for lunch (own expense) in the harbour area of Anzio we continue to Rome and our British Airways flight arriving London Gatwick in the late evening. This is the end of the tour although you have the option of an overnight stay with breakfast at an hotel near the airport.
