Join Carol Meldrum for an exciting voyage along Norway's stunning coastline with a chance to experience the magic of one of nature's most amazing phenomenon - a breathtaking performance against a winter's Arctic sky of the dazzling Northern Lights. There's plenty of time for knitting and crochet in workshops with Carol as MS Nordlys cruises amongst the fjords, islands, islets and skerries that make up a coastline considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Though days may be short, Norway's remarkable landscapes take on a special beauty at this time of year. Each day you can step-ashore and explore, or relax and simply observe the snow-cloaked scenery and wintry lifestyle of Norway's remotest coastal communities.

Carol Meldrum is a textile designer, workshop tutor and author of many popular knitting and crochet titles. She is also the creative force behind the fashion accessories label Beatknit. WORKSHOPS

Nordic Brights - Knit or Crochet Cowl

Inspired by traditional Nordic patterns, the workshop aims to show you how these can be adapted for crochet techniques or worked in knit exploring colour combinations.

Over the course of the trip, you will work through a series of stitch patterns to create a cowl, using a selection of neutrals and brights, just the thing for keeping stylish and cozy in the dark winter nights.

The cowl is worked as a single length, and then joined to make a loop, so you can work to any length - go extra long for wrapping around and around or keep things nice and snug.

You will have a selection of knit and crochet stitch patterns starting with the more straight forward and progressing to the more advanced. Perfect for developing your skill or for the experienced stitcher you can tweak the design to give the cowl your own individual touch.

As well as the main project, there will be a selection of smaller projects with a Nordic Christmas feel to them to work on throughout the trip, perfect for hanging on your tree or to give as a small handmade gift.

DAY 1

Meet your Tour Manager at London Gatwick for the flight to Bergen where you'll transfer to your hotel. This evening, enjoy a welcome dinner in the hotel with Carol Meldrum.

DAY 2

This morning, a guided sightseeing tour of Bergen introduces the highlights of Norway's charming second city known as the 'Gateway to the Fjords'. Enjoy time at leisure for lunch and to explore the traditional handicraft stores on historic Bryggen waterfront before embarking MS Nordlys to start your northbound coastal voyage in search of the Aurora Borealis.

DAY 3

Knit and crochet with Carol as you cruise Norway's rugged coastline. Today is a chance to admire the highly ornate buildings decorated with turrets, spires and gargoyles in Norway's art nouveau town of Alesund.

DAY 4

The gothic spired Nidaras Cathedral is the centrepiece of the ancient city of Trondheim founded by Viking King Olav Tryggvason as early as 997. You'll have time to explore before continuing your knitting and crochet projects with Carol.

DAY 5

Today we will cross the Arctic Circle, look for Trolls in the steep-sided mountains at the entrance of Trollfjord, step-ashore in Bodo and cruise alongside the magnificent granite peaks of the Lofoten Wall. And there's still time to knit, natter and crochet!

DAY 6

Many Arctic expeditions started from Tromso, the 'Capital of the Arctic'. You may like to take your own mini polar expedition on an optional husky dog sled ride. From here, the ship is sailing in waters where, as you knit and crochet with Carol, you've the best chance of seeing the northern lights.

DAY 7

Knit and crochet at 'the top of the world' before calling in Honningsvag - a small, remote town that is your gateway to the North Cape. The ship then continues north sailing into the heartland of the indigenous Sami people.

DAY 8

Just a few miles from the Russian border Kirkenes marks the end of this wonderful voyage. After disembarking the ship you'll transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
