Join Royal School of Needlework tutor, Amy Burt, for her first embroidery retreat with Stitchtopia based in Northern Cyprus. We'll be staying in Kyrenia; a bustling town with a mix of old and new which is said to be the most beautiful town in Cyprus thanks to its harbour and mighty Venetian castle.

Full day tour to Lefkosa - the capital city of Northern Cyprus. Explore the narrow streets within the city walls where we'll discover some old-fashioned craft shops and learn about the local crafts at Büyük Han, a lovingly restored 16th Century trading station in the middle of the old town. We’ll also have a look at the market hall and Selimye Mosque.

Full day tour - starting at the citrus growing area of the island. Visit St. Mamas Church in Güzelyurt and see the Golden Leaves of Soli exhibition at the Museum of Archaeology and Nature. Visit Lefke Village to see a local handcraft organisation and learn about the traditional handcrafts of the region, including Lapta and Lefkara embroidery and beautiful pictures made with silk cocoons.

Workshops - enjoy three full day and 1 half day workshops with Amy. The first 2 days of the workshops will start with working on a small raised map of Cyprus in various goldwork techniques such as chipping, leather appliqué, pearl purl outlines and padding. The last day and half will consist of making a small Cyclamen flower which will be made of individual embroidered petals with a wired edge. Students can choose to make this in to a brooch or add it to their Goldwork map of Cyprus.

Amy S Burt aka ‘Lady B Embroidery’ was introduced to the world of hand sewing by her Grandma at the tender age of 5. It was during 2007 - 2013 whilst living in Berlin that she rediscovered her passion for embroidery; hand sewing, making and selling her leather clothing accessories.

She returned to London in 2014 after being one of three students accepted for that year’s ‘Future Tutors Programme’ at the world-famous Royal School of Needlework based at Hampton Court Palace. The 3-year full-time teacher training course in hand embroidery trained future RSN tutors in over 25 different hand embroidery techniques.

Amy graduated in July 2017 with Merit and now works full-time as an embroiderer. She teaches regularly for the RSN’s Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Degree in Hand Embroidery, partnered with the University of Creative Arts. As well as teaching for the RSN she teaches for the London Embroidery School based in Soho.

Amy also works as a freelance embroiderer in the fashion industry. She has been a Senior Embroiderer at the British Haute Couture fashion house Ralph & Russo since 2015 and freelances for fashion houses such Alexander McQueen and Peter Pilotto. She often teaches private lessons throughout London and the South East and has been commissioned for private work for collectors and designers.

In 2018, Amy’s Tapestry Shading embroidery of ‘The Young Stevie Nicks’, in Tapestry Shading technique was chosen from over 20,000 entries to be displayed in London during the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts 250th Summer Exhibition curated by Grayson Perry RA. Amy’s work was displayed with 1,350 works of art including pieces by Banksy, Tracy Emin and David Hockney. Her work was hung in the main ‘yellow’ gallery personally selected by Grayson Perry.

This morning we’ll meet with our local guide and enjoy a half day tour of Girne, still widely known by its Greek name, Kyrenia. Today we enjoy a full day tour to Lefkoşa, the capital city of Northern Cyprus and the last divided capital in the world. (Known as Nicosia until 1974). We’ll walk along the narrow streets within the city walls, discovering some old-fashioned craft shops and learning about local crafts at Büyük Han, a lovingly restored 16th Century trading station in the middle of the old town. We’ll also have a look at the market hall and Selimye Mosque. The afternoon will be free for you to have some lunch, do some shopping, visit one of the city’s many museums or stop in one of the many cafes and watch the world go by.

This afternoon we’ll head towards Lefke village, where we’ll be welcomed by the local handcraft organisation in their small shop. We’ll learn about the traditional handcrafts of the region, including Lapta and Lefkara embroidery and beautiful pictures made with silk cocoons. We’ll also have the opportunity to buy some homemade produce to take home as a souvenir.
