Rich in history, art, architecture and cultural heritage, this Baltic cruise promises to be the perfect canvas for exciting textile discovery. We’ll visit four countries, including an overnight stay in magnificent St Petersburg, once the imperial and now the cultural capital of Russia. Included private Stitchtopia excursions explore Sweden’s textile heritage and the traditional crafts of Estonia. Stitchtopia are delighted to welcome expert Sarah Ashford, who will host a full programme of workshops and informal hand stitching sessions keeping hands creative during days at sea.

INCLUDING WORKSHOPS WITH SARAH ASHFORD

“I am thrilled to be travelling to the Baltic's, Scandinavia and Russia with you. To think that we are going to be stitching and working on our patchwork as we travel to such exciting destinations; it's going to be wonderful!

We're going to be working on a hand stitched and hand quilted patchwork cushion, allowing us to stitch slowly and soak up the atmosphere as we cruise. We'll be pairing some of our favourite and most precious scraps with fabrics from my Great British Quilter Back to Basics collection to create a beautiful, scrappy patchwork. This idea is inspired by the tradition of Russian quilting; in the past, many people in the villages were poor and had no money for fabrics so they had to use fabrics from clothes from all the members to the family to create their patchworks. You too may want to include scraps that are special to you, to make your patchwork truly unique.

Once our patchwork top is completed, we shall be learning the beautiful art of Kantha quilting. This hand quilted finish will add an heirloom quality to your cushion and will be a wonderful opportunity to work with the 20 different colour threads from my GBQ Back to Basics Aurifil 12 weight thread collection, kindly supplied by Aurifil Thread.

We shall then be working on some English Paper Piecing to create a Hoop Art. Again, this is a lovely opportunity to embark on some slow stitching that can be picked up and put down in between exploring the sights and sounds of each destination and learning some new skills at the same time.

I cannot wait to meet you, teach some new skills and watch your beautiful projects come to life.”

DAY 1: DOVER

Meet Sarah Ashford and your tour manager at the port of Dover where we embark Boudicca at the start of what promises to be a fantastic cruise. The ship will depart Dover in the late afternoon. Tables have been reserved for the group at early-sitting dinner and it’s a chance for you to get to know your fellow stitchers.

DAY 2: AT SEA

This morning Sarah will host the first of her workshop and introduce her specially designed stitching project for this textile holiday. In the afternoon there will be a second workshop where you can continue stitching under the guidance of Sarah.

DAY 3: GOTHENBURG

After a leisurely morning at sea, Boudicca arrives in Gothenburg. This afternoon we’ll enjoy a private excursion to the nearby town of Borås to visit the Textile Museum of Sweden. The museum, part of the Textile Fashion Centre, is located in a former industrial area of this charming town with a long history of textile production. It is home to a fantastic collection of textiles from the mid-19th century to the present day and we’ll see fabrics, samples, clothes and other items, along with Europe’s leading collection of textile machines. Our guided tour also includes the exhibition ‘Artist Textiles’, which includes a private collection of rare textiles influenced by the likes of Picasso and Warhol. We return to the ship in the late afternoon in readiness for Boudicca’s departure for St Petersburg.

DAYS 4 & 5: AT SEA

Two relaxing days at sea. Each morning we’ll enjoy workshops with Sarah and in the afternoon, you can continue your stitching, or you may choose to join some of the ship’s own onboard activities.

DAYS 6 & 7: ST PETERSBURG

This morning we arrive in St Petersburg for an overnight stay in Russia’s second largest city. Over the two days the ship has a full programme of optional full, half day and evening shore excursions to help you seek out the highlights of the city founded in 1703 by Peter the Great. For two centuries St Petersburg was Russia’s imperial capital and ornate palaces, splendid parks and gardens are just some of the many treasures waiting to be discovered.

Please note: Should you wish to go ashore independently in St Petersburg a Russian visa is required. Russian visas are not required when going ashore on the ship’s organised shore excursions.

DAY 8: TALLINN

Lying on the Gulf of Finland charming Tallinn is the capital of Estonia. Today we’ve included a private excursion showing you the traditional arts and crafts of this former Baltic state. Inside the walls of the historic Old Town our local guide will take us to the arts and crafts guilds where traditional and regional handicrafts, folk art and costumes can all be admired. We’ll visit Eesti Käsitöö Kodu selling exquisite and quality handicrafts from the best craftsmen and women in Estonia. We also visit the somewhat unique NUKU Museum of Puppetry. This fascinating museum was created out of a need and wish to find a place to store puppets and during our guided tour we’ll see table puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppets and glove puppets that have now reached the end of their stage and screen lives.

DAY 9: AT SEA

As Boudicca cruises the Baltic we’ll continue our stitching with Sarah during a morning workshop. The afternoon you may wish to continue stitching or join in the ship’s own onboard activities.

DAY 10: COPENHAGEN

Today we have a full day in the delightful Danish capital where you may choose to join one of the ship’s optional shore excursions. Alternatively, you can go ashore independently and discover the charms of the city that was once home to Hans Christian Andersen. Whether you choose to visit the famous Little Mermaid on Langelinje Pier, stroll the cobbled streets of atmospheric Nyhavn, or visit the shops in Stroget, there’s plenty to explore.

DAY 11: KIEL CANAL

As Boudicca transits the Kiel Canal relax, enjoy the views and scenes of everyday life as they unfold on either side of the ship. It’s a great backdrop if you wish to continue your stitching!

DAY 12: AT SEA

A final day at sea is a chance to finish your project and enjoy the company of Sarah and your stitching companions.

DAY 13: DOVER

Boudicca arrives in Dover and it’s time to say farewell to your fellow stitching enthusiasts bringing this fantastic Baltic Textile Adventure to a close.
