Discover the delights of the Danube on one of the most scenic journeys through the heart of Europe. From the city of Passau on the Austrian border to the Hungarian capital of Budapest, we cruise in comfort and style aboard MS Serenity, passing through the beautiful scenery of the Wachau valley and dipping into the history and culture of amazing cities along the way.

Included sightseeing excursions are the Benedictine Abbey in Melk and city tours in Vienna and Budapest. Your holiday also includes exclusive textile-related excursions in Vienna, Budapest and Bratislava.

As we cruise between our ports of call, enjoy three half day workshops with Carolyn enjoying the scenery as we go.

"During our trip we will be working on quilt as you go self-bound squares that can be made into a quilt, kept separate or stitched together as a quilt.

The patchwork pages or blocks are based on a quilt as you go technique that is made from 10in squares of fabric, with a 6 1/2in square of wadding and patchwork.

I would show how to make, and hand quilt the basic unit, then in each of the 3 sessions work on projects for each block. These could include cross-stitch, very simple, (all based on some traditional design from a country we visit,) back stitch embroidery, an appliqué design and some hexagon patchwork.

I’ll also talk a bit about any textiles we can buy on the trip, things like tea towels, stitched badges trinkets etc... and how we can include these in the patchwork.

This is a handwork project so will fit in with any spare moments on the trip and will allow everyone to work at their own pace. I’m looking forward to exploring and sharing ideas and seeing the individuality of the projects shine through."

Meet with Carolyn and your Tour Manager at London Heathrow for our flight to Munich. Transfer by coach to Passau, where we embark our floating home, MS Serenity. This evening we’ll enjoy dinner in the ship’s restaurant and chat to our fellow travellers as we glide down the Danube towards Melk.

This morning we arrive in the small town of Melk, which lies in the beautiful Wachau valley. Here we’ll visit the Benedictine Abbey, one of the most famous monastic houses in Austria and occupied by monks for over 900 years. This afternoon we’ll enjoy our first workshop with Carolyn as we cruise towards Vienna.

Grand palaces, baroque castles, magnificent squares and striking monuments are just some of the things that we’ll see on this morning’s included city tour. In the afternoon we return to the city to visit the MAK Museum. The museum is home to an unparalleled collection of applied arts, design, architecture and contemporary art. Our visit will concentrate on the Textiles and Carpets collection, one of the most comprehensive and valuable of its time. The collection contains objects from Late Antiquity to the present day from Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

This morning we arrive in Budapest, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We’ll explore both sides of the city, traditional Buda and the more cosmopolitan Pest, on our included city tour.

This evening you can join an optional excursion to experience Budapest by night with a traditional folklore show (additional cost applies).

This morning we enjoy some more time in Budapest with an exclusive included excursion to the Goldberger Textile Museum. This museum tells the story of Hungary's textile industry and of the textile factory founded by Jewish entrepreneur Ferenc Goldberger in 1784, which dominated Hungary's clothing industry until the late 20th century. Learn through interactive exhibits, check out the revolutionary machinery (for its time) and marvel at the gorgeous fabric samples. This afternoon we’ll enjoy our second workshop with Carolyn as we cruise towards Bratislava.

This morning we wake up in Bratislava. The city is dominated by its castle and unique suspension bridge. Our exclusive included full-day excursion will include highlights of the old town and visits to Primates Palace and ULUV, a local handicraft centre. Primates Palace is considered as one the most beautiful buildings in Bratislava for its pale pink and white exterior. It was built in the 18th century and offers large oil portraits of Habsburg royalty, sparkling crystal chandeliers and tapestries. The palace serves as the seat of the Mayor of Bratislava. Úľuv is a national handicraft cooperative focused on documenting Slovakian traditional crafts, care of collections, issuing publications on crafting, organization of exhibitions and presentations of folk-art crafts. This evening we cruise towards Durnstein.

The town of Durnstein nestles among Austria’s most famous vineyards and is crowned by the ruins of the castle that once imprisoned Richard the Lionheart. It’s a beautiful place filled with cobbled streets, pretty courtyards and 16th century houses. We’ll have some free time here before setting sail for Passau. As we cruise towards Passau, we’ll enjoy our final half-day workshop with Carolyn.

This morning we disembark and transfer by coach to Munich airport for our return flight.
