Battleground Belgium, led by Will Fowler

Belgium, a land riddled with conflict and confrontation, was for centuries the battleground of Europe! Over time the armies of almost every big power of Europe fought on Belgian soil for resources and power. This special Remembrance Tour explores the famous Battle of Waterloo when Napoleon was defeated and his Empire collapsed, the Western Front battles where hundreds of thousands died in the trenches, and gives a glimpse into tensions in Europe during the Cold War.

A full day tour focusing on Waterloo promises fascinating insight into the historic battle. Visits to historic sites and museums take us through the first days of the First World War to the moment the last shots were fired. Carefully, restored sections of trenches are a chance to experience the horrors faced by those on the front line and we’ll hear some of the personal stories of those honoured for their courage. You may wish to pay personal respects as we visit memorials and Commonwealth War Grave Cemeteries honouring the fallen in private Acts of Remembrance. We’ll also join others in remembering those who died defending Ypres at the poignant Menin Gate Ceremony.
