John Hamill

John Hamill

From a very young age John showed an interest in battlefields and military history, and aged 15 he joined the army as a Junior Leader. John’s career in the Regular Army spanned 47 years. He served with a number of different Regiments and Corps including the Middlesex Regt, Queens Regt, Royal Army Medical Corps and the Intelligence Corps reaching the rank of Major before retiring in 2008. In June 2002 John was awarded an MBE for his military service.

Since retiring John has enjoyed a new career as a battlefield guide leading military history tours to Europe. They include Ypres and the WWI Western Front, the WWII sites of Dunkirk and the Normandy Landings, and tours that follow the journey of the Unknown Warrior. John’s interest in military history also encompasses medieval conflicts such as the Battle of Lewes and Wolverhampton, the English Civil War, the Battle of Waterloo, and the retreat of Napoléon’s French Army across the Pyrenees from Spain into France during the Peninsula War Campaign. John is an accredited member of the International Guild of Battlefield Guides.
