John Hamill

John Hamill

John’s interest in battlefields and military history began as a small boy where he caused uproar in his father’s garden by digging trenches and having battles with model soldiers in the flower beds!

He has enjoyed a 47-year career in the Regular Army, serving with a number of different Regiments and Corps including the Middlesex Regt, Queens Regt, Royal Army Medical Corps and the Intelligence Corps reaching the rank of Major before retiring in 2008.

Since retiring he has guided several tours to the battlefields of Europe, including the WWI Western Front and the sites of WWII Dunkirk and Normandy Landings. He also leads tours which follow the journey of the Unknown Warrior, medieval conflicts such as the Battle of Lewes, advancing in time to the Battle of Waterloo, the retreat of French Army of Napoléon across the Pyrenees from Spain into France during the peninsula war campaign.

John was awarded an MBE in June 2002 and is an accredited member of the International Guild of Battlefield Guides.
