Peter McLelland OBE

Peter McLelland

After a short spell in the Territorial Army, Peter McLelland served for 37 years as a Regular Army Infantry Officer. He was commissioned from Sandhurst into The Queen’s Regiment (later the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment), and served in Canada on exchange with the Canadian Army, Germany, Gibraltar, Belize and the UK including extensive operational service in Northern Ireland and Bosnia.  He is a graduate of the Army Staff College and was appointed an OBE in 2000. On retirement from the Army he worked for five years in the Defence Industry.

Peter’s research into where his grandfather was wounded in 1914 developed his particular interest in the Great War, and in 2007 he took up guiding. His WW1 focus is mainly on the British Western Front, and he has taken several groups to the Armistice commemorations at both the Menin Gate in Ypres and the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme. His WW2 guiding includes the Italian Campaign, Normandy and Dunkirk. Peter has led groups ranging in age from 8-year old schoolchildren to 100-year old veterans. He is an active member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides.
