In the spring of 1944 Japan launched an offensive into north-east India. Codenamed U-Go, the offensive targeted the Allied base at Imphal, located on a plain surrounded by mountains. To hinder reinforcement, the Japanese plan included a simultaneous attack on Kohima, a small village on the Imphal-Dimapur Road. A successful attack would have given the Japanese the opportunity to capture the railhead and logistic base of Dimapur as they were by this stage of the war, very short of supplies needed to continue their advance into India. Instead, a decisive Japanese defeat marked the turning point of one of the most gruelling campaigns of the Second World War.
Fought between 8 March and 18 July 1944, the Battles of Imphal and Kohima are the main focus of this special Remembrance Tour. Through visits to the battlefield areas we gain insight into the intense fighting that at times was so close soldiers threw grenades directly into enemy trenches. We see poignant memorials, and honour the fallen in private Acts of Remembrance when visiting Commonwealth War Grave Cemeteries.
Complimenting the military history of this tour, we’ll enjoy sightseeing tours of Kolkata, Old & New Delhi, and visit some of India’s most extraordinary sites including the imposing Agra Fort, the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata and the stunningly beautiful Taj Mahal.
