Liberation Day in Jersey, led by Marc Yates

Marking the end of the of the Second World War for Jersey and its inhabitants, May 9th - known as ‘Liberation Day’, is Jersey’s national day. It is a significant event in the island calendar and this Remembrance Tour is a wonderful chance to join in the 76th anniversary celebrations.

The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied by German forces in World War Two and this tour explores Jersey’s unique wartime history from Occupation to Liberation. With visits to significant sights and specialist museums, we uncover events of 1939 and 1940 in the lead up to the occupation and gain an understanding of the hardship that islanders suffered during nearly five years of occupation. We’ll learn about the British Military operation ‘Nestegg’, set in motion with the objective of liberating the Channel Islands, and the intense relief when freedom was finally announced. This tour is a chance to commemorate those who lost their lives with a special Act of Remembrance at St Helier War Cemetery.
