Operation Market Garden and Floriade 2022, led by Andy Johnson

In the aftermath of the D-Day landings and subsequent Allied advance across France, it seemed, for a fleeting moment, that the end of the war in Europe was in sight. Instead, Allied forces faced months of bitter fighting against a tenacious enemy.

Operation Market Garden was a daring airborne plan to outflank the Siegfied Line, secure the River Rhine crossings and advance into Northern Germany. One of the largest Allied operations of the Second World War, it was also the only major Allied defeat in the North West Europe Campaign. Although ultimately it failed to achieve its objectives, Operation Market Garden was one of the largest airborne operations in history, and this remarkable feat of arms led to the liberation of a large part of the Netherlands at a time when many Dutch people were close to starvation.

Almere, located to the east of Amsterdam’s city centre will be the stage for the Floriade Expo, a world famous, floral spectacle which is held every 10 years. Floriade will focus on a theme of Growing Green Cities making our cities more fun, liveable and sustainable and visitors will be treated to the sight, scent and colour of a variety of flowers, plants, vegetables and fruit bespread over five themed zones.

Join us as we pay our respects and remember the fallen, recognising the courage and determination shown by Allied airborne troops and the units that assisted, combined with a visit to Floriade Expo 2022, in what will be an extraordinary once-in-a decade experience.
