West Yorkshire Knitting Retreat

Join Jane Crowfoot in West Yorkshire for 6 days of workshops and yarn-themed excursions. On this retreat, visit the collection of the Knitting & Crochet Guild, a treasure trove of textile wonders, housed in a former mill in Slaithwaite – a village also home to Stylecrafts, where we will have a behind the scenes tour of the mill. Our learning of wool production continues with mill tours of British Wool in Bradford and West Yorkshire Spinners. There will also be the opportunity for some local sightseeing as we spend some time in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Saltaire Village.

Jane Crowfoot

Trained as a constructed textile designer, Jane Crowfoot has worked within the hand knitting craft industry for the last 25 years and is recognised as one of the leading designers within her field, more recently acknowledged as one of the pioneers of the UK crochet revival. Jane is a designer and maker, author and tutor specialising in contemporary and innovative crochet designs for the home interior, drawing much of her inspiration from her love of art, textiles and travel. Jane focuses much of her design work on creating imaginative and motivational Crochet Along (CAL) projects, which give the home crafter the chance to distance learn many crochet techniques by working through one of her vibrant and appealing designs in bite size instalments. Jane lives and works in North London, UK.

Itinerary

Meet Jane and your tour manager at the 4-star Leonardo Bradford hotel, in the heart of Bradford city, close to City Park and the Alhambra Theatre.

This evening, meet your fellow knitters for dinner in the hotel.

Knitting Workshop

The collection of the Knitting & Crochet Guild is a treasure trove of textile wonders. Housed in a former mill, in the Colne Valley village of Slaithwaite, it is at the heart of Yorkshire textile production. Visitors will be see the huge range of textiles, publications, tools and yarns in the collection, in particular the Yorkshire elements.

Yorkshire knitting was traditionally done using a knitting stick or sheath and highly patterned gloves were produced in small numbers. These traditions will be demonstrated using the knitting sticks in the collection. Patterns from the Dales glove from the collection will inspire a project for the participants. You will also receive an annual membership, which has lots of member benefits which you can find on their website.

After, there will be the opportunity for time at leisure to have some lunch in Slaithwaite before walking over to Stylecraft. Here we will have a behind the scenes tour of the mill and learn about the process behind developing and launching new yarns. We will also have the opportunity to view the showroom and enjoy some tea and cake before returning to the hotel.

Knitting & Crochet Guild Slaithwaite Stylecraft

We start today with a visit to British Wool in Bradford, the perfect opportunity to see that earlier stage processing and learn about wool. British Wool demonstrate the unique characteristics of British sheep breeds and offer a walk around their grading depot.

After, we will travel to Saltaire Village. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is named after Sir Titus Salt who built a textile mill, known as Salts Mill, and this village on the river Aire. The village was famous for producing high end luxury fabrics, samples of his cloth can be seen in Salts Mill. Enjoy free time to explore at leisure and have lunch.

This afternoon we will visit West Yorkshire Spinners. Spun in Yorkshire, they create beautiful British yarn with care, innovation and expertise. We will enjoy a tour of their mill and have the opportunity to browse a pop-up shop.

Information on Knitting & Crochet Guild Annual Membership: All guests joining this tour will receive an annual membership to the guild. Anyone who is already a member will have a year added on to their existing membership or you can choose to gift the membership to a friends or relative, or alternatively decline it.

Tour notes: You will need to have a reasonable level of fitness to get the most out of this holiday. On excursion days you will need to walk a short distance from the hotel/ship to the coach and you should be able to board the coach unaided. On arrival at the excursion destination, you should be able to alight the coach unaided and there may be a walk between the coach drop off point and the excursion venue. By their nature, walking tours, museum visits etc involve being on your feet for a significant amount of time. Whilst our excursions are taken at a leisurely pace, for the enjoyment of everyone in the group you should be able to keep up with your fellow travellers.
