James and Jane Tullett

James and Jane Tullett

James has been playing bridge for over 30 years and is regularly picked for his county. He also enjoys playing in congresses around the country (when his less competitive wife Jane lets him!)

James has run his own furnishing business for over 30 years from his base in Norfolk and recently, with his good friend and fellow First for Bridge host, John Barker, has established the Norfolk Bridge Academy. Between them, they have over 100 pupils learning to play and enjoying the wonderful game of bridge.

Jane has worked as a manager for over 12 years at her local university and then the NHS. She brings her organisational and interpersonal skills to the forefront to make an excellent hosting team with her husband James.

Jane and James have travelled extensively in recent years to explore exotic parts of the world, such as Peru, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. They both enjoy meeting new people, with the emphasis on fun and laughter, which may possibly include a drink or two.

Itinerary

Play & Explore holidays are suited to intermediate players who wish to learn new skills, and regular players looking for a relaxed holiday with bridge.

Our bridge programmes will vary according to the length of your break, and, in addition to playing bridge, our host will aim to include interactive bridge seminars.

Your duplicate bridge will be available every evening between 7:45pm and 11:15pm. We endeavour to vary these evening sessions, balancing between teams and pairs and playing relaxed and friendly bridge.

Bridge will also be offered some afternoons between 2:30pm and 4:45pm. These sessions are normally given over to open pairs/teams. On UK holidays, bridge sessions may take place in the mornings instead of the afternoons, complimenting any included excursion programme.

Masterpoints are awarded on evening sessions, and on day sessions with over 5 tables.

During your bridge holiday, nothing is obligatory, and you can play in as many or as few bridge sessions as you wish. We don’t forget you are on holiday and our bridge programmes also allow time to relax, giving the opportunity for you to explore the surrounding area.

Make your own way to the hotel.

Tonight, we enjoy dinner and a welcome drink followed by evening bridge.

Bridge

This morning we head to RHS Garden Rosemoor. Gifted to the RHS by Lady Anne Berry in 1988, and known for its many garden ‘rooms’, RHS Garden Rosemoor spans 65 stunning acres.

Visitors can breathe in the sweet-smelling scents of more than 250 varieties of blooms in the two Rose Gardens – The Queen Mother’s Rose Garden and the Shrub Rose Garden. For those curious about crops, there is produce ripe for the picking in the Fruit and Vegetable Garden. Celebrate the flavour of the seasons and explore a mouth-watering array of delectable edibles.

The vibrant Hot Garden is famed for sizzling reds, oranges and yellows, waves of plants chosen for heat and vibrancy. If the heat gets too much, visitors can retreat to the serene pastels and blues of the Cool Garden, a tranquil Eden around a teardrop-shaped pond.

This afternoon, we return to the hotel to enjoy a cream tea and free time.

Dinner this evening is followed by bridge.

Today we head to Powderham Castle. Built by Sir Philip Courtenay in 1391, it has remained in the family ever since. Having withstood the ravishes of the civil war in the 17th century, it was embellished in the 18th century with fine interiors. During the Victorian period, the exterior was transformed into the spectacular building you see today. An included guided tour of the castle will uncover 600 years of Courtenay family history.

The castle is set within a 3,500-acre estate, with beautiful gardens around the castle for you to revel in. We also include a tractor/trailer park Safari ride through the deer park.

Dinner in the hotel is followed by evening bridge.
