Bulgaria

1 tour from £895pp

Nestled in the heart of Eastern Europe, Bulgaria is a country that’s stayed true to its roots. The language is Slavic, the alphabet Cyrillic, and it is the oldest country in Europe that hasn’t changed its name since it was first established. Rich history, heritage and culture has flourished following invasions by the Greeks, Scythians, Romans, Byzantines and Turks, and having emerged from four decades behind the iron curtain, this fascinating destination is a must-visit.

Italian, Austrian, German and Bulgarian architects all played their part in creating Ruse, which is considered one of the most elegant cities in Bulgaria. Famous for its unique 19th and 20th century Neo-Rococo and Neo-Baroque architectural styles, a stroll down Alexandrovska reveals a charming ensemble of notable buildings. The Lyuben Karavelov Regional library is one of the oldest spiritual centres in Bulgaria and boasts beautiful baroque ornaments, whilst Freedom Square with its dominating Monument of Liberty affirms Ruse’s nickname of ‘Little Vienna’.

In the north of Bulgaria, the Danube River forms a large part of the border with Romania. A cruise along the Danube is sure to bring some surprises, as you take in medieval castles, uninhabited islands and impressive cities.

An excellent 5-star hotel awaits you in Albena, with a wide, sandy beach, complimentary sunbeds and umbrellas, and spacious bridge room.
