Architect Walter Gropius launched the radical Bauhaus arts movement in 1919 in Weimar, Germany after the devastation of the First World War. Bauhaus brought together fine arts and crafts to create buildings and interiors for the modern age. Fine artists, including Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, taught alongside cabinetmaker Marcel Breuer and textile designer Gunta Stolzl in a unified, guild-style programme. Gropius declared, ‘Let us together create the new building of the future which will all be in one: architecture and sculpture and painting.’ Following the centenary year of this influential movement, visit the two sites of the Bauhaus schools in Dessau and Weimar as well as modernist buildings in Berlin, inspired by Bauhaus. The Bauhaus influence rapidly extended across Europe and the US; it changed the way we live at home and at work forever.
