The so-called “Spanish Golden Age” saw the greatest flourishing of the arts in Spanish history: from the masterpieces of Velázquez and El Greco to Miguel de Cervantes satirical Don Quixote. However, it was also a time of great turmoil. Overspending, economic decline, war and religious upheaval saw huge shifts in the Iberian peninsular. In this study day we will look at four of the greatest masterpieces of the Spanish Golden Age by El Greco, Velázquez, Zurbaran and Murillo. Each one will shine light on a different aspect of the age, from the intrigues of the Habsburg Court to the new ideals of the Counter Reformation and the trade with the New World.
