Knitting Traditions of Estonia

Join knitwear designer and illustrator Aleks Byrd as she returns to her Estonian roots on this 8-day knitting holiday. Our journey begins in Tallinn, one of Europe’s newest capitals, boasting a rich mix of architecture and culture. Staying near the Old Town, which was almost untouched by war and remains perfectly preserved, we’ll see the highlights of the city with our local guide and learn about Estonian handicrafts. The city is a firm favourite with our guests, and there will be time to explore independently before we travel to Pärnu. Located in southwestern Estonia, this resort town is known for its sandy beaches. We will also visit the small town of Haapsalu, the coastal parish of Tõstamaa and the Island of Kihnu, where we will learn about the distinctive knitting traditions and spend time with local master knitters. Aleks will accompany the tour throughout and has designed a project using four Estonian knitting techniques, originating from the areas we will be visiting during this unique tour.

Workshop Information: Together we will knit a special cowl designed for this retreat, learning four unique Estonian knitting techniques from the places we will be visiting. The cowl will use Estonian wool to create an embellished knit that will remind you of each destination visited. From Tõstamaa, known for its Roosimine inlay and fringe, Haapsalu, the home of Estonian lace and the nupp bobble stitch, and Kihnu, with its sweet decorative namesake knitted braid.

This morning, we will tour Tallinn Old Town on foot. The Old Town is divided into two areas, the Lower Town and the Upper Town. During our exploration of the Upper Town, we will visit the St. Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral, Toompea Castle and the Dome Church, Tallinn’s oldest church, before soaking up spectacular panoramic views from the Kohtuotsa viewing platform.

In the Lower Town, we will see the Danish King’s Garden, the Town Hall Square, the picturesque Viru Gates and the famous Katarina Guild with open studios and shops of local crafts women. We will also visit the Estonian Handicrafts House, where folk traditions exist alongside more contemporary items, and you will be able to purchase authentic Estonian handicrafts.
